Use of the State House
The Maryland State House is administered by the State House Trust which oversees the use of the public areas of the building, as well as its interpretation and its care and maintenance.
The State House Trust was created in 1969 to oversee the area inside State Circle, including the State House. This oversight extends to the use of buildings and grounds and any exhibits on display there. The Trust also supervises all improvements, alterations, additions, landscaping, and repairs within that area.
Because of the historic nature of the building and the fact that it is a working office building, the Trust restricts the use of the building only to events that relate directly to the history of the State House or Maryland government or history.
The voting members of the Trust are:
Chair: Martin J. O’Malley, Governor
Ex officio: Thomas V. Mike Miller, President of the Senate
Michael E. Busch, Speaker of the House of Delegates
J. Rodney Little, Director, Maryland Historic Trust
Secretary: Dr. Edward C. Papenfuse, State Archivist
The contact for information and requests is Elaine Rice Bachmann, Director of Exhibits, Conservation and Artistic Property, Maryland State Archives. Phone: 410.260.6445.
