LAKES

Between the Eastern Shore and the Allegheny Mountains, over 100 lakes can be found in Maryland. Serving largely for recreation and reservoir, Maryland’s lakes all were constructed. With many created as a result of dam construction, these lakes vary greatly in size. The largest is Deep Creek Lake, which covers nearly 4,000 acres near Oakland, Garrett County. Most, however, are much smaller, many covering less than 50 acres. One such lake is Lake Waterford which is only 12 acres in surface area, in Pasadena, Anne Arundel County.

Although no natural lakes survive in Maryland, evidence of such lakes has been found. One example is Buckel’s Bog, located along the Casselman River, near Grantsville. Geologic surveys show that this area was a lake that covered 160 acres of western Maryland during the late Pleistocene (19,000-14,000 years ago).

    Over 11.5 miles in length, Deep Creek Lake covers approximately 3,900 acres, and is the largest inland body of water in Maryland.
