Biography:

Ben Addison fled his owner, Levin Wilson's residence during the Christmas season in 1829.  After working on the canal in Georgetown for three months, Addison ran away on December 18, 1829, at the age of twenty-one.  Addison's owner thought it was possible that he may have obtained freedom papers from his brother Edward Addison, who lived in Washington, D.C.¹  Edward was freed by Dr. Bradley, also of Washington, D.C.  The runaway advertisement for Addison appeared in the Frederick Town Herald for over a month.
