Biography:

Hanson Shaw was advertised as part of a group of five runaway slaves that ran away from Roderick McGregor on the morning of November 23, 1844. Shaw was a sixteen year old, 5'5" slave whose mother was owned by Mr. William Coats, residing on the plantation of Thomas B. Crauford, .  Shaw ran away with Anthony Chase, a twenty-eight year old, 5'5" tall slave with a scar on his right arm and foot, which he got when he was burned as a child; and Ned Dodson, a twenty-three year old, 5'4" slave who was purchased from Dr. Joseph Edelen's estate, near Piscataway, where he was believed to have attempted to return.  All of them took clothes with them when they fled.  Henry Buchannan and Tom Vermillion were the other two slaves advertised.  This was the second time the two slaves had run away, the first time being in May of 1838.
