Biography:
On May 22, 1838, an advertisement appeared in the Daily National Intelligencer for Roderick McGregor's three runaway slaves: Tom Vermillion, Henry Buchannan and Frederick Chapman. Vermillion was a seventeen year old mulatto, and Buchannan was eighteen years old with a yellow complexion. It is likely that both Henry and Tom were caught, as they were once again advertised as part of a group of five runaway slaves of Roderick McGregor who fled on the morning of November 23, 1844. In the new ad, the twenty-three year old Buchannan and the twenty-one year old Vermillion ran along with Anthony Chase, a twenty-eight year old 5'5" tall slave with a scar on his right arm and foot from child-hood burns; Ned Dodson, a twenty-three year old, 5'4" slave who was purchased from Dr. Joseph Edelen's estate, near Piscataway where he was believed to have tried to return; and Hanson Shaw, a sixteen year old, 5'5" slave whose mother was owned by Mr. William Coats, who resided on the plantation of Thomas B. Crauford. All of them took clothes with them when they fled.
