Biography:

Anthony Chase, a twenty-eight year old slave, was one of five of  Roderick McGregor's slaves who ran away on the morning of November 23, 1844.  Chase was 5'5" with a scar on his right arm and foot from a child-hood burn.  Chase ran away with Hanson Shaw, a sixteen year old, 5'5" slave who resided on the plantation of Thomas B. Crauford and whose mother was owned by William coats ; and Ned Dodson, a twenty-three year old, 5'4" slave who was purchased from Dr. Joseph Edelen's estate, near Piscataway. It was thought that Dodson may have tried to return to Dr. Joseph's estate.  All of them took clothes with them when fled. McGregor also advertised for the return of Henry Buchannan and Tom Vermillion.  It was the second time those two slaves had run away, the first time being in May of 1838.
