Biography:

Sarah was a slave owned by Richard L. Smallwood of Charles County, Maryland in 1830.  Although she does not appear by name in the 1830 Census under Richard Smallwood, he was listed owning only one female slave under fourteen, which was probably Sarah.  On September 8th, 1830, Sarah ran away or was taken from the residence of Thomas W. Reeves, one of the many slave-owning neighbors of Richard Smallwood.  In 1830, Reeves owned two female slaves, and two male slaves.  Smallwood immediately suspected that Theophelus McDaniel, a free black living in Prince George's County, was hiding Sarah in his house. A warrant was issued ten days later for the search of McDaniel's house.
