Accomplice to slave flight, Prince George's County, Maryland, 1859

Biography:

On November 12, 1859 a warrent was issued for the arrest of twenty-one year old Thomas Dant of Bladensburg, Prince George's County. The warrent was issued by Prince George's County Court Clerk Charles Middleton. The warrent stated that Dant must appear before the next Circuit Court of Prince George's County held at Upper Marlborough. Dant was charge with the crime of harbouring runaway slaves and Richard Hopkins was subpoenaed to testify against Dant. After the testimony of defense witnesses William P. Brooke, John M. Dant and Richard A. Dant on April 3, 1860 Dant was found not guilty on the charge of harbouring slaves and released by the Court. The 1860 Prince George's County Census recorded Dant employed as a laborer, living with his twenty-two year old wife Harriet and their one-year-old daughter Ann in the 1860 Prince George's County Census.
