Henry Dunmore (b. circa 1825 - d. ?)
MSA SC 5496-8737
Fled from Slavery, Cecil County, Maryland, 1860

Biography:

In 1860, thirty-five year old Henry Dunmore escaped from his owner, John Maldon of Cecil County, Maryland.   When recounting his story to William Stills, Dunmore gave Maldon credit for belonging to the Methodist Church, but complained that he treated Dunmore "in a most un-christian-like manner."  Dunmore claimed that Maldon did not feed him enough and kept him outside in the cold until his toes froze.  This mistreatment motivated Dunmore to run away.  Dunmore reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
