Biography:

At the age of twenty-six, John Wesley Smith fled Cambridge in Dorchester County, Maryland to avoid the auction block.  Before his escape, Smith was owned by Daniel Hubert.  He left behind his mother, Betsy, one brother, and one sister at Hubert's farm.  Though little has yet been recovered about his life after escape, Smith is known to have reached Philadelphia on his journey to Canada and was aided of individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
