Biography:

In 1858, Robert Johns successfully escaped from his owner, William Cassey, a farmer in Cecil County, Maryland.  He was one of twelve slaves, and he "resolved that he would make one less in a short while."  He ran with his wife Sue Ann, who was owned by Susan Flinthrewof Cecil County, the wife of John Flinthrew.  Though little has yet been recovered about his life after escape, Johns is known to have reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
