Biography:

Robert Carr was a slave near West River in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.  Robert's owner, Thomas J. Richardson, was a farmer.  According to the 1850 census, Richardson owned fourteen slaves, though that number may have changed by the time of Robert's escape.  Robert began his flight to freedom on December 26, 1857, and used the Christmas holiday to his advantage.  Richardson placed the runaway ad for Robert on January 13 of the following year; by that point, Robert was days ahead of men looking for him.
