Biography:

Silas Long successfully escaped slavery in 1857 at the age of twenty-seven.  He and fellow slave Solomon Light ran from Cambridge, Maryland in Dorchester County.  His fear of being sold led him to leave behind his mother, brother, and cousin to flee to Canada.  He was owned by Sheriff Robert Bell.  Though little information has been recovered about his life after his escape, Long is known to have reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected to the Underground Railroad.
