Biography:

James Camper successfully escaped Cambridge, Maryland in Dorchester County at the age of twenty-four.  He fled to Canada with fellow slaves William Griffen, Henry Moor, Noah Ennells, and Levin Parker.  He had belonged to Henry Hooper, a member of the Episcopal Church.  Though little information has yet been recovered about his life after his escape, Camper is known to have reached Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was aided there by individuals connected with the Underground Railroad.
