Accomplice to slave flight, Prince George's County, Maryland, 1864

Biography:

William Brown, the slave of John E. Bowie of Prince George's County, William Lee, Henry Norton were three slaves who, along with three free Blacks (William and Leethe Brown, and John Kemp), who all stood charged with the crime of eniticing and assisting slaves to run away from their masters in Prince George's County.  And on the same day, January 5, 1864, they all had requisitions placed on them and issued to the District of Columbia by Governor A.W. Bradford.  The Governor appointed Judson F. Richardson, Sheriff of Prince George's County, Agent to receive the 6 requisitioned persons.  John Kemp and Henry Norton were both charged a second time with enticing slaves to run away and then requisitioned again by Governor A.W. Bradford on May 6, 1864.  This second charge of Kemp and Norton enticing slaves to run away could be evidence of a systematic network of assisting slaves in their flight.
