Accomplice to slave flight, Baltimore City, Maryland, 1857

Biography:

Baltimore City police committed Charles Manoka (alias Robert Stanley), a forty-six year old free black residing in Baltimore City, to the Maryland Penitentiary on June 16, 1857 for enticing a slave to run away.  The Baltimore City Criminal Court charged Manoka with enticing a female slave of H.S. Sankford to run away.  All of the Sankfords listed in the 1850 Census resided in Dorchester and Somerset Counties.  Since Charles was born in Cambridge, he was probably familiar with the slaves and the terrain in Dorchester County, and could possibly have harbored runaways in Baltimore City where he was a free laborer.  In the 1850 Census, Charles was listed as a laborer and married to Ellen (b.  1813 - d. ?).  Charles served his six year sentence until he was released on June 16, 1863.  In 1871 he lived at 190 South Durham in Baltimore City, and worked as a laborer.
