Biography:

Saul is also considered to have run away or to Baltimore because of a family connection known to his owner, "(Saul) has a mother or brother in Baltimore, and it is probable he is about there". This ad also relates awareness by a master, in this case, W.H. Long, that the runaway might well employ guile in his escape. The master states, "He had on when he left a striped cassiment pair of pantaloons, and blue roundabout: but it is likely he has changed his dress." Long's ad even expresses a fear of assistance being offered to his slave. Does his warning indicate suspicion of an underground network? "I hereby forewarn all persons from harboring or employing the said Negro."
