Biography:

Forty year-old Mary fled with two other enslaved blacks, Lloyd Plathey and John, from slaveholder Robert A. Clagett of Upper Marlboro in September 1851.  Pursuers believed Mary, and perhaps her fellow fugitives as well, headed eastward to Bladensburg, on the Anacostia River.  Mary had once been held there by George W. Bowie; her relatives still lived there.  Mary may have also run north, into the dense woods known as "The Forest of Prince George's County," stretching from present-day Upper Marlboro along Church Road to Bowie. Mary's husband, and also her father, were held on two different plantations within the "Forest."
