Biography:

In May of 1858, John Shaw ran away from his owner, William Hoffman of Frederick County, who lived between New Market and Frederick City.  Shaw was believed to have run with Fred Fowler, a Frederick County slave owned by W.L. Willis of New Market.  Shortly before their disappearance, the twenty year old Fowler and twenty-four year old Shaw were seen together.
