Roger Brooke Taney (1777-1864)

Biography:

Born March 17, 1777, in Calvert County, Maryland.  Son of Michael and Monica (Brooke) Taney.  Attended public schools; Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, 1795; studied law under Jeremiah Townly Chase, Annapolis, 1796-99.  Admitted to the bar, 1799.  Catholic.  Married Anne Phebe Carlton Key, sister of Francis Scott Key, January 7, 1806; children:  Anne, Sophia, Ellen, Elizabeth, Maria, Alice, and one son.  Died October 12, 1864, in Washington, D.C.  Buried in St. John's Cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.

Private law practice, Frederick County, 1801-23; Baltimore, 1823-64.  Director, State Bank of Frederick, 1810-15; Frederick County Bank, 1818-23.  Counsel, Union Bank of Maryland, Baltimore.  Member, Maryland House of Delegates representing Calvert County, 1799.  Member, Maryland State Senate, Western Shore, 1816-18, 1819 (did not serve), 1820.  Attorney General of Maryland, 1827-31.  Acting U.S. Secretary of War, July 1831.  U.S. Attorney General, 1831-33.  U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, 1833-34.  Chief Justice, U.S. Supreme Court, 1836-64.
