public manner as be may think proper, giving a minute de-
scription of the clothing, person and bodily marks of such run-
away.
7. If the owner, or some person in his behalf, shall not apply
for such runaway within sixty days from the time of advertising
as aforesaid, and pay or secure all such costs and charges as
have accrued by reason of apprehending, imprisoning, and ad-
vertising such runaway, then such runaway shall be dealt with
as hereinafter provided.
8. When any negro shall be committed to the jail of any
county as a runaway, and the notice required to be given by the
sheriff shall have been given, and the time for his detention ex-
pired, and no person shall have claimed said runaway and proved
his title to the same, it shall be the duty of the sheriff forthwith
to carry such slave before the judge of the Circuit Court, or
judge of the Orphans' Court, with his commitment; and such
judge is hereby required to examine and inquire, by such means
as he may deem most advisable, whether such runaway be a
slave or not; and if he shall have reasonable grounds to believe
that such runaway is a slave, he may remand him to prison, to
be confined for such further time as he may judge right; and if
he shall have reason to believe that such runaway is the slave
of any particular person, he shall cause such notice to be given
by the sheriff to such supposed owner as he may think most
advisable. But if said judge shall not have reasonable ground
to believe such runaway to be a slave, he shall forthwith order
him to be released; and if no person shall claim such runaway
within the time for which he may be remanded, and prove his
title, the said sheriff shall release such runaway; and in either
case, when such runaway shall be discharged, the expense of
keeping such runaway in confinement, and publishing such no-
tices, shall be levied on the county.
9. The sum allowed for taking up and securing any runaway
slave between the ages of fifteen and forty-five, more than
twenty and less than thirty miles from the home of such run-
away, shall be fifteen dollars; if under fifteen or more than
forty-five years of age, seven and a half dollars; if such run-
away be apprehended more than thirty miles from his home,
the sum allowed shall be fifty dollars, if such runaway be more
than fifteen and under forty-five; and if under fifteen or over
forty-five, twenty-five dollars; Provided, that no reward shall be
